MY favorite places TO eat IN AUSTIN

Last Updated: 5/10/21 | may 10th, 2021

Austin is home to an incredible food scene — from BBQ joints to food trucks to healthy, organic outlets to (of course) Mexican restaurants.

As more and more people move to Austin (close to 160 a day at last count) and the city balloons, dining fare has started to include more varied and higher-quality options. (We finally have some terrific sushi here!)

To meet the needs of the expanding population, nearly 200 new food trucks and restaurants open up each year. With so many eateries opening all the time, you’re going to get hugely increased variety, selection, and quality.

I spend a lot of time eating out around Austin and my automobile purchase has made it easier to reach places further from my house. While I still more food to eat, I want to share some of my favorite places to eat in the city for your next check out (you might see me at one of these places as I frequent them often):

Asian

If there is anything I dislike about Austin, it would be the lack of good Asian cuisine, as it is my favorite in the world. When it comes to Asian food, it has a lot of those fusion joints that serve Chinese, Thai, sushi, and Korean all at once. most are acceptable but they won’t blow you away. However, there are a few restaurants worth eating at:

Bar Chi – decent sushi but an unbelievably affordable happy hour (5-7pm each day). My pals and I come here because it satisfies the sushi craving on the cheap! (206 Colorado St, 512-382-5557, barchisushi.com)

Thai-Kun – As a Thai food snob (ever since I lived in Thailand), I’m always disappointed at Thai restaurants because I never think the food is as breathtaking as in Thailand. This place in Austin is the closest to true Thai food that I’ve found so far. (1816 E. 6th St, 512-407-8166, thaikun.com)

Uchi – The fanciest high-end sushi restaurant in the city. They also have a sister restaurant called Uchiko. Both live up to their reputations and are good date places. Reservations recommended! (801 S. Lamar, 512-916-4808, uchiaustin.com)

Wu Cho – This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. They serve a very popular dim sum brunch on Sundays. Be sure to come early as it gets packed during dinnertime and Sunday brunch, and the wait for a table can be up to an hour. (500 W. 5th St. #168, 512-476-2469, wuchowaustin.com)

Fukumoto – This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. They have a small but incredible sushi list (get the toro roll) and lots of izakaya options (get the eel and karagai). Mám to tu rád. (514 Medina St, 512-770-6880, fukumotoaustin.com)

TaLad Thai & Lao Streetfood – fast service, authentic Thai food. It’s the best Thai food truck in the city. get the spring rolls or khao soi dumplings. (1606 E 6th St, 737-867-9701, facebook.com/TaLadAustin)

Saps – another amazing Thai place. They offer a substantial menu with all the conventional classics. (5800 Burnet Rd, 512-419-7244, sapsthai.com)

Sushi Junai Omakase – This place is one of the best sushi places in the city. It deserves way more popularity than it gets. The fish is super fresh, they do inventive rolls, delicious appetizers, and have an incredible sake menu. (315 Congress Ave, 512-322-2428, sushi-junai.app)

Loro – Loro offers a tasty blend of Asian smokehouse and Texas BBQ. founded by the owners of Franklin barbecue and Uchi, the plates here are small but always delicious. expect a wait. (2115 S Lamar Blvd, 512-916-4858, loroaustin.com)

Americana

If there is one thing Austin does well, it’s “Americana” food. I define that as a fusion of multiple cuisines: burgers, fries, steaks, seafood, and the like.

Launderette – located in an old laundry store, this restaurant is one of the hottest spots in town and serves an amazing menu of Americana and seafood, as well as a decent selection of wine. some of my favorite dishes include crab toast, burrata, okra, brussels sprouts, and grilled octopus. If you’re coming for dinner, come early, as it fills up fast. (2115 Holly St, 512-382-1599, launderetteaustin.com)

Truluck – This is my favorite steak restaurant because it’s one of the few places where you can also get fresh seafood (crab, oysters, lobster). It’s not cheap, but if you want a upscale steak house, try this. (400 Colorado St, 512-482-9000, trulucks.com)

Péché – A new Orleans–inspired restaurant serving Bayou food, and it has a very friendly staff, tasty cocktails, and an extensive whiskey list. (208 W. 4th St, 512-494-4011, pecheaustin.com)

24 Diner – This classic diner serves big portions of all your favorite greasy spoon staples (like mac n cheese, meatloaf, chicken and waffles). It’s open 24/7 so you can grab a bite anytime. (600 N Lamar Blvd, 512-472-5400, 24diner.com)

BBQ

Austin is world-famous for its BBQ and you can’t walk down the street without running into a restaurant that serves it. The title for Austin’s best BBQ is hotly contested among fans, and I don’t claim to know who’sSprávne – pre mňa je BBQ buď dobrý alebo skutočne sakra dobrý.

Žije až do všetkého humbuk! Som veľkým fanúšikom vyprážaného avokáda a tacosu Trailer Park. Každé miesto je vždy zabalené, takže očakávajte čakanie, najmä cez víkendy. Jedlo je tu tiež dosť korenené. (Viaceré miesta, Torchystacos.com)

Taco deli – ďalšia vynikajúca reštaurácia, ktorá podáva ústa zalievanie raňajok tacos. (Viaceré miesta, tacodeli.com)

Mexičan a Tex-Mex

Vivo – Solid Mexičan so značnými porciami, pikantnými jedlami a priateľským personálom.

Indian

There isn’t a lot of good Indian food in town, mostly because there just isn’t a lot of good Asian food in general.

(75 Rainey St, 512-665-6513)

Podávajú tiež vyprážané zelené paradajky a uhorky.

They have a good wine selection and decent happy hour too!(2612 E Cesar Chavez St, 512-599-4052, interorestaurant.com)

Salt & Time – This rustic eatery is located in a butcher shop (sorry, vegans!). They have a meat-centric farm-to-table menu that emphasizes local fare. Their burgers and truffle fries are out of this world. (1912 E 7th St, 512-524-1383, saltandtime.com)

Red Ash – This is one of the best restaurants in Austin and serves up Italian fooda ústne voda, šťavnaté steaky.

Kvalitný trh s morskými plodmi – To má niektoré z najlepších morských plodov v meste a počas týždňa robí ustricu vo výške 1 dolár, ktorú nemožno poraziť. CLAM COWDER je tiež vynikajúci. Je to jednoduchý kĺb morských plodov bez čerpa! (5621 Airport Blvd, 512-452-3820, QualitySeafoodMarket.com)

I discovered My youth at Casa San Pablo: Laguna, Philippines

For the longest time, I felt like a part of me had been missing. Whenever I come house to my hometown, I’m appalled by exactly how much the location has changed. even our home is totally unrecognizable. The trees that I grew up climbing, the grass covering our backyard, they are gone. dávno preč. What’s there now are pavements. Concrete floors with nothing however dust. Yes, dust is what’s left of my early years.

Last month my buddies as well as I decided to spend a weekend at Casa San Pablo for a brainstorming. “Great,” I thought, “finally, a location to believe that’s so different from the concrete box we work in.” So we packed our bags, drove to San Pablo City, Laguna as well as inspected in to Casa San Pablo. We weren’t blown away. No, not blown away. What was there was a whisper, a gentle breath reminding me of the things I had lost.

I went there for an inspiration. It was there. however there was something else. I discovered my youth at Casa San Pablo.

When we were young, we had a wider, more sensitive perception. We noticed whatever that was new, that was strange, that was curious.

But as we grow up, as the world becomes more familiar, we tend to ignore the little things that caught our interest when we were kids. The novelty uses out. The strangeness fades away. The curiosity now has the prospective to kill the cat. These little things are precisely what makes Casa San Pablo special. It is not just a location to stay or eat or have fun. It is an ocean. everywhere you look, your eyes get flooded with memories of your juvenile years as well as your heart, ah, your heart drowns.

The restaurant is not just a restaurant. It is a time machine. The atmosphere takes you on a trip to the moment when you hang at the kitchen area while your mom was cooking. as well as the food makes you keep in mind why you like food in the very first place.

And as you walk around the place, you keep in mind the days when a little paper animal was your bestfriend…

And the rain was a welcome playmate, not a buzzkill…

And the sun utilized to smile not burn…

The days when we very first noticed that symmetry is quickly broken…

Yet there’s symmetry in things you don’t expect. You just have to look for it.

The days when you might still see oddness in beauty…

And beauty in oddness…

The days when you might area what made you happy. No matter exactly how far…

No matter exactly how hidden…

No matter exactly how small…

Everything contained a possibility of happiness, of life…

The days when we would dance even when nobody was looking…

Especially when nobody was looking…

When the only thing that mattered was that your mom was there…

And the illusion that your dad would never break. Or leave. Ever…

And the ignorance that all houses were never broken…

And the lie that you will never, ever be alone.

How I missed those days.

Today, she’s written a blog publish about exactly how she’s been able to stay on budget plan for the last 36 weeks as well as the lessons she’s discovered as a new traveler!

After over ten months on the road, it’s time to update the neighborhood once again on my trip! because the last update, I spent two weeks in Brazil, a month checking out Morocco, as well as two months in Europe viewing the world Cup.

Now, I’m in Tanzania checking out Africa!

After so long on the road, I believe it’s time to response the concern that truly drove the contest in the very first place:

“Is budget plan travel possible on Matt’s $50 a day recommendations?”

One of the reasons Matt sponsored this trip was since he wished to show everybody that travel is possible on his suggested budget plan of $50 a day. He desired a living situation research study for the concepts in his book!

After tracking all my costs — including my flights, travel insurance, as well as incidentals — I’ve spent $14,450 or $56 a day so far. I’ve not only discovered staying with Matt’s budget plan possible however not whatsoever demanding (especially with a bit creativity).

After Africa, I’ll be flying to Southeast Asia, where I’ll end my trip. I suspect that will lower my general costs even more!

How I stayed on budget

At the beginning of my trip, I went to the Galápagos Islands, which are not backpacker-budget friendly, so I had some work cut out for me to get back on budget.

I saved on housing costs by Couchsurfing as well as staying with friends. In Chile, I stayed with buddies I satisfied in Colombia. In Paris, I stayed with a buddy I satisfied in Brazil. I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of kind people who offer me help, particularly with accommodation, as I travel, expecting nothing in return. The travel neighborhood is incredibly warm as well as open. It makes buddies of strangers.

I’ve been balancing out other costs by likewise keeping my transportation costs low. I opted to take the longer, less expensive method to get from A to B. In Brazil as well as Europe, I utilized BlaBlaCar to save money.

In Morocco as well as South America, buses were my go-to choice — they were inexpensive as well as easy. I booked a restricted number of flights as well as tracked costs so I might book them at just the best time if possible.

Food has been the only location I haven’t cut back. I’m a foodie and, as Matt always says, what’s the point in traveling if you don’t eat the regional food! In South America, this was typically easy. There were tons of lunch specials around as well as inexpensive regional food so I was able to eat on a budget.

In Europe, it was much harder. Food was by far my most significant cost however I have no regrets. A girl’s got to eat!

However, that’s not to state it’s all been very easy. I’ve made a ton of rookie mistakes. even though I’ve checked out numerous articles as well as books on traveling, when you’re on the road, you tend to get caught up in the moment. It’s one thing to checked out about it, it’s one more thing to be there doing it!

And that can result in a lot of quickly preventable mistakes! For example, a few of the “doh” moments I had:

I spent 16 EUR on coffee as I was walking with a buddy I satisfied in Rome. It was SO hot as well as we just wished to get off our feet before going to the Vatican. huge mistake! We even failed to remember to ask the prices. because it was so close to the attraction (something I typically never do), each cappuccino was 8 EUR — as well as I got two! Oh, guy were we pissed.

When I was in Morocco, just before going to the desert, I went to the supermarket to purchase three day’s worth of snacks for lunch. I had heard that lunch was not included in your trip cost (already ridiculous, at 86EUR for three days!) as well as the trip guide, of course, only takes you to costly lunch places. I did purchase a lot of groceries — 130 dirhams’ worth ($14 USD). however then I ended up eating at the restaurants anyway since I felt as well uncomfortable not eating with everybody as well as as well lured to purchase a good poultry tagine instead of eating path mix.

Looking back, I would have done a self-guided trip of the Sahara. I understood that before I did the tour, however I was lazy as well as tired, as well as I wished to get out of Morocco. Being lazy is a quick method to shed money — as well as frequently likewise a quick method to have a less special experience.

I satisfied some truly fascinating people in Buenos Aires who invited me to dinner. one of them was a regional expat who was excited to show us that Buenos Aires “isn’t all meat anymore.” It was a fantastic place, however that dinner was about $25 USD, which was practically my budget plan for the whole day! then we had drinks afterward as well.

My guidance for Others: exactly how to save money When You Travel

Backpacking isn’t like getaway travel. When you travel on vacation, you have bit time however much more money. When you backpack, the opposite is true: you have time, however bit money.  If you seek as well numerous comforts as well as conveniences, you’ll strike your budget plan as well as have to go house early!

If I were to provide guidance to others, my primary piece of guidance would be to take a minute before your trip to believe about what costs you expect as well as what you are prepared to spend. (Matt talks a great deal about this.) Ask around for the best cost for experiences, food, as well as lodging to ensure that you have the most precise information. the time you spend researching will assist you much better budget plan you money.

On the road, I would suggest doing two things: very first is to compose down whatever and, second, is to forego convenience.

In his book, Matt says, “It’s the people who don’t compose down their costs that go house early.”

Speaking for myself, I can state this is totally true. There were a few days right here as well as there where I would be so caught up in the experiences I was having that I totally failed to remember to compose down my spending. Afterward, when I sat down to recall what I had spent, I realized I was not believing about these costs as well as exactly how they in shape into my budget.

Writing them all down assisted me be mindful exactly how much I was spending. It enabled me to make adjustments to my costs as I went. It’s since of that that I haven’t run out of money yet!

Even much more essential is foregoing convenience. Backpacking isn’t high-end travel. The majority of the time, there isn’t somebody to port your luggage, drive you directly to your lodging, or organize your day trip or tour. however walking when you can, sharing a trip with other travelers, asking for assist from a kind stranger, or organizing your own schedule — all those are totally free or almost free.

***
Staying on budget plan has ended up being second nature to me now. It’s not difficult when you internalize the technique as well as discover to believe outside the box. When you do that, you can spend your energy on why you are traveling in the very first place: for new experiences as well as new friends.

I’m ten months into my yearlong trip. Some moments whizzed by. Others felt like they lasted forever. But, overall, it has been whatever I really hoped it to be – as well as likewise unlike anything I expected.

SEPOC ISLAND, BATANGAS: budget plan travel guide & schedule

2020 • 3 • 11

First things first. Sepoc isn’t an island. It’s a beach lacing the western suggestion of Maricaban Island in Tingloy, Batangas. It’s the exact same island that harbors a few of the municipality’s other fast-rising beaches like Oscar Island (which is not an island either) as well as Masasa Beach.

Masasa beach has significantly altered Tingloy, the only Batangan municipality that is not on mainland Luzon. When weekend warriors found that a spectacular undeveloped cove lies just five hours away, they came in droves, pitching tents, setting up camps, as well as checking out what utilized to be understood only to locals. If you’re after solitude as well as you go to Masasa on a weekend, you’re not going to discover it right here anymore. Thankfully, there are other remarkable beaches around.

This brings us to Sepoc, located on the other side of the island. Locals phone call it Sepoc Point, referring to the suggestion of Maricaban where a steep rocky cliff stands guard.

Sepoc Point
Just to handle expectations, it isn’t as fine or white as that strewn on the shores of Boracay or Palawan, however it’s light, soft, as well as supple, composed primarily of small damaged corals polished by the waves over time. It’s fantastic for the typical activities like beach bumming, volleyball, as well as numerous others. There are rocky parts however they’re contained on one side. It is likewise forested, which offers shade for those staying away from the sun. however what sets it apart is it isolation. many people believe it’s a separate island since it’s cut off from the rest of municipality. There is no simple method to get right here other than by boat since the beach is flanked by steep cliffs that comprise a beautiful view.

7 things to do in Chinatown Singapore: A diy Heritage walking trip

Our Day 3 in Singapore started early. We were up as early as 7am. The first item on our schedule for that day was the Chinatown Heritage walking Tour, which I was very thrilled about because I had never been to this part of Singapore before. note that it is a do-it-yourself tour. even before the trip, I already identified the places to go to so I somehow knew what to expect. Armed with just a map, my mother and I headed to Telok Ayer street for a relaxing, and hopefully enlightening, walk around Chinatown.

Although part of Singapore Chinatown, Telok Ayer street boasts of multi-religious buildings and structures. aside from a Chinese temple, the street is also home to a mosque, a Methodist Church and an Indian shrine. Confused? Vitaj v klube. but that’s what makes this place much more endearing. It tells you so much about how Singapore values diversity in culture and religion.

One of Singapore’s earliest Chinese Christian churches, the Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church  features a combination of oriental and western influences. The Chinese-style roofing system caps this building but its Art Deco features can be discovered in the windows.

Al-Abrar Mosque started out as a thatched hut in 1827. This humble beginning is why it is called by its other name “Kuchu Palli,” which implies “small mosque” in Tamil. It is also called Masjid Chulia because this was where immigrants from Coromandal coast in southern India worshiped.

This mosque has come a long way from being a thatched hut. between 1850 and 1855, it underwent a series of transformation. but much of what we see today is a product of the comprehensive 1986 renovation.

3. Thian Hock Keng

Thian Hock Keng
Thian Hock Keng is probably my favorite part of the walking tour. It was just a stand-out! The facade or the gates were beautiful and its interior was even better. The main prayer hall is home to an image of the Queen of Heaven. beside it are Bao Sheng Da Di, the Protector of Life and Guan Ti, the God of War. They say that this temple is mainly Taoist but there are Confucian and Buddhist elements in it too.

Said to be the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore, this stunning structure started out as a humble joss house in 1821-1822. It was built to honor the Protector of Sojourners, Ma Zu Po. That’s why in its early years, Chinese immigrants would check out this place to give thanks for safe travel. Centuries ago, this temple was actually on the beach and it was the first place that Chinese travelers would go to when they reach the island.

From 1839 to 1842, the humble joss house went through a major reconstruction using Chinese techniques. The reconstruction was started by philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. the most amazing part of how it was constructed was the fact that the whole structure was supported by only wooden and brick walls and nowhere in the temple will you find nails. Not a single one.

The design of everything in the place is just mind-blowing. everything is intricately made. I just can’t. just can’t. BEAUTIFUL!

You see the lower best part of the photo above? That’s one of the door guards that’s expected to safeguard the temple.

The one thing that I liked the most being in this temple was that while I was taking pictures, I realized that although I was in an ancient site, I could still see the gorgeous, modern buildings. It’s an overwhelming mixture of the past and the present of Singapore.

Note that photography is allowed in many parts of the temple but NOT in the main prayer hall.

4. Nagor Durgha Shrine

Nagore Durgha Shrine
A few yards from Thian Hock Keng stands the Nagore Durha, a stunning Indian shrine, which I thought looked like a huge layered cream cake. 😀

Originally called Shahul Hamid, this Indian Muslim shrine was built in 1828-1830 by muslim immigrants from southern India. This discusses the pretty combination of classical and Indian Muslim elements in its architecture. The facade features an arched doorway in between arched windows. above the windows and the doorway is an elaborate lace-like design that resembles a palace. In the corners are tall layered minarets.

5. Amoy Street

Amoy Street
After getting blown away by Nagor Durgha, turn left onto the street perpendicular to Telok Ayer — Boon Tat Street.  then turn left again onto Amoy Street. It’s a beautiful, unwinded street (maybe because it was a Sunday when we were there). walk down Amoy street and see the numerous second transitional style shophouses there. You’ll see a lot of various influences in the architecture of the houses on this street.

Walk until you reach the end of the road and you’ll find yourself at the Amoy street Food Centre again. From here, you may choose to go back to the Tanjong Pagar MRT station or if you’re hungry, find your way to the Maxwell Food center nearby.

6. Buddha Tooth Relic museum and Temple

Buddha Tooth Relic temple and Museum
Standing just across the Maxwell Food center is the Buddha Tooth Relic temple and Museum. opened in 2007, the Tang-style structure houses sacred Buddhist artifacts including bone and tongue relics, the most treasured of which is the tooth relic exhibited on the fourth floor.

From here, continue walking along South Bridge road and explore the rest of the Chinatown Proper. You’ll see plenty of shops, eateries, and museums along Mosque, Temple, and Pagoda Streets.

7. Chinatown Heritage Centre

Inside Chinatown Heritage Centre
Located along Pagoda Street, the Chinatown Heritage Centre showcases the history and heritage of the early Chinese migrants in Singapore in a restored three-story shophouse.

From here, the MRT Chinatown station can easily be reached on foot.

WHAT I pack FOR MY TRAVELS: YOUR guide TO packing

Last Updated: 4/27/21 | April 27th, 2021

After over ten years of traveling the world, what I bring in my bag has altered a lot. most of that modification has to do with the truth that I now bring a great deal of gear associated to blogging, however it likewise shows that I’ve discovered a great deal about packing because I very first hit the road in 2006.

I’ve traveled with huge duffel bags, 60L packs, 30L packs, carry-ons, as well as whatever in between. I’ve discovered different packing methods with the years.

And today I want to share that understanding with you.

So, what ought to you pack on your trip?

As bit as possible.

Packing light is a cliché, yet one that has a great deal of reality to it. The much more I travel, the much more I recognize I don’t requirement a great deal of stuff. whatever I requirement now fits into one backpack.

I like to compose down whatever I believe I’ll requirement — as well as then cut it in half. I always ask myself, “Will I utilize this sufficient to validate the weight?”

Most of the time the response is no.

I take only the essentials, as well as if I truly requirement something I didn’t bring, I purchase it on the road. It’s not that difficult to discover medicine, clothes, or an umbrella overseas.

I likewise try to stay with the exact same climate during my trips to prevent having to bring great deals of different type of clothes. I don’t want to be carrying sweatshirts around Thailand! However, plans can change, as well as if that happens, I’ll purchase a light jacket or a sweater. I’ll keep it up until it is a concern as well as then provide it away.

Also, you can do laundry overseas so I like to bring sufficient clothes for 7-10 days, do laundry, then repeat. There’s no requirement to bring a great deal of stuff when you can just laundry what you have.

As for the long response to what you ought to pack? Well, below is my suggested packing listing — however you ought to tailor this to your needs.

(Note: This focuses on travel to a non-winter climate. If you’re heading somewhere cold, you’ll requirement to change accordingly.)

CLOTHES

5 t-shirts

1 long-sleeved T-shirt

1 pair of denim (heavy as well as not quickly dried, however I wear them a great deal — a great alternate is khaki)

1 pair of shorts

7 pairs of underwear

1 bathing suit

1 pair of flip-flops

1 pair of sneakers

8 pairs of socks (I always lose my socks so I take extra! I have no concept where they go?)

1 pair of gown shoes (heavy to bring around, however when I go to friends, we usually go somewhere not sneaker-friendly. This is destination dependent. I do this much more in Australia as well as Europe as well as less so all over else.)

1 gown t-shirt (for going to a respectable location in the evening)

1 pair of black gown socks

TOILETRIES

1 toothbrush

1 tube of toothpaste

1 bundle of dental floss

Deodorant

1 razor

1 little bottle of shampoo

1 little bottle of shower gel

1 towel (always pack a towel!)

SMALL medical KIT

Obväzy

Hydrocortisone cream

Antibacterial cream

Očné kvapky

Tylenol

Prípravok na dezinfekciu rúk

For much more on very first aid kits, inspect out this comprehensive publish on exactly how to make one for any type of destination.

VÝBAVA

Laptop

Smartphone

Universal power adapter/converter

Kindle (if you’re an avid visitor as well as don’t want to carry around books)

Camera (if you want much more than just smartphone photos)

ZMIEŠANÝ

A essential or combination lock (everyone ought to have one!)

Flashlight (trust me, it is available in handy)

Ziplock bags

LifeStraw (water filter)

Special tip: purchase a little backpack so you won’t be lured to overpack. We subconsciously like to fill empty space, so if you have a huge bag, you’re much more likely to overpack just so you don’t squander space. By getting a smaller backpack, you’ll be required to take only the fundamentals — a mind technique that works extremely well!

***
I’ve discovered that this listing leaves me wanting for nothing. I’m sure numerous of you will checked out this as well as say, “But what about X?” or “You truly don’t requirement Y.” Well, that works for you, as well as this listing works for me. tailor your listing to fit your travels.

I compose this publish not since I believe there is one ideal method to pack however to response the recurring concern about what I pack as well as why. This is my listing as well as fits my “chase the summer, online in hostels” lifestyle.

But the genuine point I want to highlight is that you truly don’t requirement a great deal when you travel. You never requirement as much as you think.
